There's been a bit of a coup in Mykonos, where the Belvedere Hotel has reigned supreme for over-10 years. For being such a jetset destination, there are surprisingly few reliable luxury hotels on the islands. A savvy traveler learns quickly that a membership in LHW (Leading Hotels of the World) means little more than the plaque placed on each member-hotel. Once a sleepy stayover of the 1960's filled with 3-week package-tourists, this hotel quietly embarked on an ambitious redesign of all guest rooms and common areas that has resulted in becoming the hottest new destination on Mykonos. Located just beyond the historic windmills adjacent to town, the hotel features a lively lobby lounge with rattan furnishings and raw-stone accents maintained since the hotels creation. The expansive grounds and free-form pool are a welcome change to the often-sparse common areas of other popular village hotels. The in-house restaurant features gourmet Mediterranean cuisine on a waterfront terrace offering its own buzzing bar scene on weekends. A spa offers personally tailored relaxation treatments overlooking the pool and landscaped gardens, as well as a decent-sized fitness area.

The Room

Not everything has been updated at the hotel, which is obvious from the overgrown planters encountered between the main lobby and guest rooms. But once inside, all 52 rooms offer a unique mix of luxury furnishings and boutique hotel quirkiness. Décor is tasteful and fun with bright colors used against all-white walls. Most rooms feature either a balcony or porch overlooking the central courtyard, pool area, or desired seaside view. Guests of deluxe view rooms also receive international newspapers and deluxe body and hair care products -- everyone else gets the house standard. Varying between adequately large to spacious, all rooms feature elegant wooden floors, high-end fabrics with patterns inspired by the 60s and luxurious bathrooms with bathtub and/or shower with Jacuzzi.
